Early Morning - fanfiction
Hey... I've been writing for a long time - since I was a child - and most of my House friends always ask to read my House related works. Unfortunately, I have never been able to find the time to translate them, so this time I tried something different. I wrote a small huddy fanfiction directly in English, which I find way easier than translating something I already put together in another language. Don't ask me why, but I spent entire evenings trying to figure out how to shift my writing style from Italian to English with no results, while this time I took a different approach and I'm definitely satisfied with the outcome. I hope you will like it as I do and I beg your pardon for any mistakes: this just flew out of my mind. No dictionaries, no nothing.
EARLY MORNING
The first lights of an early winter morning gently stroke her, while she was turning the alarm clock off. Next to her, a man was laying asleep, eyes wide shut and some kind of a complex expression on his face. She tried to move, but his right forearm was over her chest, as he were holding her beside him in his sleep.
She glanced at him one more time, slightly surprised to have him on the other side of her bed. She felt like something didn't match, but she couldn't figure out what, exactly. It should have been as any other morning, but something told her it wasn't. Still, she knew it was her life: her bedroom, her blankets, the man beside her, his smell, the scruff on his face, the soft feeling of his arm around her chest and his hand on her cheek.
Somehow, she knew that particular day was better than any other, but she wasn't able to recollect any distinct memory of what made the others worse. A quick look at the clock told her it was 7.30 am; her rational mind taking over her fuzzy morning feelings told her to stop letting her random thoughts go and finally wake up.
– Rachel. – She gently kissed the little girl in the cradle. – Honey. It's breakfast time. –
She handed her a drinking bottle. Rachel reached it with her tiny hand and moved it toward her lips. Cuddy sat beside the cradle, helping her baby holding the bottle, watching the shiny golden sunrise over Princeton. It would have been another freezing day, hence that perfectly clear blue sky.
Piles of paperwork were staring at her as only paperwork can do, with those meaningful looks you get from things which shouldn't normally have eyes, but seemed to get them just to look at you when you don't want to pay attention. She took the baby from the cradle and wrapped her in a pink woollen blanket, holding her with her right arm, then she grabbed the paperwork with her other one and walked to the kitchen, barefoot.
– Good morning, Sunshine. Did we plan a quickie before going to work? Otherwise I can see no reason why you got up so early. –
She froze him with a glance. – I woke up to feed Rachel. And I thought I may get to work on some papers. Meeting ahead with some financing society. They're willing to give us tons of dollars for trials. –
– Real doctors don't give a crap of dollars. And then there's you... –
Cuddy took Rachel to the living room, leaving her to play on the carpet. The giant yellow duck Wilson gave her was her current obsession, her best friend.
She came back to the kitchen, her night gown half open, her dark brown curls falling down to her shoulders. – I know. Real docs just think of having angry, savage sex with their employees underneath some desk or in the lockers room. – A slight smile brightened her face.
– Since when I am an employee...? –
– Since I hired you. – She slowly walked toward him.
He glanced at her, their eyes striking sparkles. – You don't seem to think of me as an employee, when we do dirty, dirty things in exam room one. –
She smiled at him – A real boss wouldn't allow such a disrespectful act of... – love, her mind told her. But it was a game, and the rules had been silently established long time before that moment: part of them was not to show too much romance, despite sometimes she desperately desidered to tell him she loved him. By the time she had finished her thought, he was already kissing her with a passion she immediately recognized as true love, no matter how they called it, no matter if it was half camaradery, half sexual banter, half respect and affection, half unesplicable chemistry between two human beings who had been sharing most of their adulthood since college.
– Ma... ma. Mama! – A tiny, sweet voice called her from the living room. They quit kissing, and both looked through the door. She glanced at him, worried he could be disappointed they had been stopped. But in his eyes she saw just as much amazement as there was in hers.
– Cuddy. Your kid is calling you by name for the first time and you're worried we stopped our quickie. You're screwed up as that... – With his usual limp, he reached the coffee machine. They shared a silent smile.
The sound of the alarm clock abruptely woke her up. She was alone, no one beside her. But she could still hear her child calling her from her bedroom. With a smile, she rolled out of bed.

no, it's just a one shot. But I'm probably writing something more, soon or later.
